The 4 Seasons Of Your Menstrual Cycle

The 4 Seasons Of Your Menstrual Cycle

Your menstrual cycle is so much more than “on my period” and “not on my period”. Who knew, right? I remember a few superficial classes about periods, but nothing too in depth. Which is probably why so many of us only focus on the bloody bits. And if we’re being completely honest, our cycle is seen (more often than not) as a weakness and something to hide and be ashamed of.

Guess what? That couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s not only NOT a weakness, but it’s actually somewhat of our superpower!

Our menstrual cycle is made up of four parts/phases. And each one can be compared to one of the seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. So let’s breakdown what happens in each season, your superpowers, and how you can make the most out of each.

Menstrual Phase, your cycle’s Winter:

What’s Happening: The first day in which you bleed, marks the beginning of this phase and of your cycle. Progesterone levels drop, which triggers the shedding of the lining of the uterus – since the egg from your previous cycle was not fertilized. The bleeding period typically lasts 3-7 days.

Your Superpower: During this phase, you are more likely to be hyperaware and in tune with your wishes and desires. A great way to tap into this insightful phase is by journaling. Take advantage of these days and see what you uncover.

Nutrinut Tip: Your menstrual phase is about turning your attention inward and listening to your needs. Stop, rest, cancel plans, say no when you’re not feeling it, and practice tons of loving self-care.

Follicular Phase, your cycle’s Spring:

What’s Happening: Your pituitary gland is signaled to send the follicle-stimulating hormone (or FSH) to your ovaries. This is important to let them know that it is time to release another egg. Estrogen levels will begin to rise, which causes the thickening of the uterine lining in preparation for a potential pregnancy.

Your Superpower: After resting during your winter, you are now ready to awaken and blossom. Summon your inner muse, try new things, explore all possibilities – the world is your oyster.

Nutrinut Tip: Because this phase comes with a boost of energy and creativity, it’s a great time to start projects, be social, and even go on new adventures.

Ovulatory Phase, your cycle’s Summer:

What’s Happening: As estrogen levels continue to rise, an increase of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) + LH (luteinizing hormone) stimulates the follicle to release an egg. After the ovary releases the egg, it survives for about 24 hours before it dies if not fertilized. Ovulation usually happens halfway through your cycle around days 13-15.

Your Superpower: You are absolutely magnetic during this phase. You’re feeling energetic, confident, and social. It’s time to let your magic shine.

Nutrinut Tip: Summer is a time to go get it! Launch your new business, have those tough conversations you’ve been hesitant to have, meet new people, ask for what you want. This is when you are most likely to get your point/message across in an effortless way.

Luteal Phase, your cycle’s Fall:

What’s Happening: This is the second half of your cycle. After ovulation, the follicle that contained the egg turns into a hormone-secreting body called corpus luteum which begins to secrete progesterone and estrogen. The rise of progesterone will be your body’s cue to keep the uterine lining healthy preparing for a possible pregnancy.
If there’s no fertilization of the egg, the corpus luteum will become inactive and estrogen and progesterone levels will drop – triggering your menstruation. This hormone roller-coaster is what can lead to PMS symptoms that many experience.

Your Superpower: Although you might feel your energy levels starting to decline as well as your desire to socialize, you will start becoming a lot more perceptive and detail-oriented. It’s a great time to take on house/life declutter and prioritize tasks that require close attention to detail.

Nutrinut Tip: In this phase you are turning your energy inward, in a way your body is nesting and preparing for your upcoming winter. Start slowing down your social calendar and enjoy upping your self-care routine.

‘Tis The Season To Seed Cycle

Your hormones fluctuate throughout your entire menstrual cycle. During the first half, estrogen rises and peaks right before ovulation. In the second half of your cycle, progesterone levels rise and surpass estrogen. The fluctuation of hormones is like a perfectly synchronized dance, which can easily get out of balance with lifestyle factors like stress and lack of proper nutrition.

This is where seed cycling comes in. The rotation of the seed blends is specifically designed to help balance estrogen during the first half of your cycle and then progesterone on your second half. Thus nutritionally supporting every season of your menstrual cycle with important vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, fiber, and so much more!
